The movie that no one (except for me) expected to be such a hit that it is now, has now become Australia's top grossing film of all time. How did a movie that cost about half a million to make, make so much money, when no one knew what it was about?
Avatar, released in Australia December 18 2009, grossed $58.8m, outselling Titanic with $57.65m, making it the fastest selling movie ever, reaching it in just 22 days. It also breaks the record for the biggest 3D movie, raking in 78% of the total revenue.
Worldwide, Avatar has become the 2nd top grossing film ever, with $1.34b, behind Titanic with a whopping 1.84b. US takings is $429m, 3rd behind Titanic and 2008's top movie The Dark Knight, both reaching over $500m.
Aussie Sam Worthington stars in this movie as a paralized ex-marine, on a mission to the world of Pandora, as an avatar. He is drawn to the world after meeting one of the Navi natives Neytiri, played by Zoe Saldana, and they fall in love. He is then torn between obeying his orders and saving the world he feels is home.
The movie is directed by James Cameron, who also was responsible for Titanic, making him the only director to have two movies reach over 1b. They are also the only movies in the top 10 of the all time highest grossing movies that are not sequels.
Can anything stop Avatar's running rampage over the Box Office?
